Registering a pet in Dubai is a legal requirement, not an optional formality — and it’s simpler than most new pet owners expect once you know the steps. This guide walks through the process as it currently stands under Dubai Municipality’s pet ownership rules.

Who Needs to Register a Pet

All dog and cat owners in Dubai are required to register their pet with Dubai Municipality. Registration is only available to UAE residents holding a valid Emirates ID.

Step 1: Microchipping

Before registration, your pet needs an ISO-compliant microchip implanted by a licensed veterinary clinic — a small, rice-grain-sized chip inserted under the skin that links a unique ID number to your Emirates ID and contact details. This is usually done during a routine vet visit and causes minimal discomfort.

Step 2: Vaccinations

Your pet needs to be up to date on core vaccinations before registration is finalized. Your vet clinic can confirm exactly which vaccines are required and provide the documentation needed for the registration application.

Step 3: Registering with Dubai Municipality

Registration is completed either online via the Dubai Now app or the dm.gov.ae portal, or in person at a Dubai Municipality veterinary services center. You’ll need:

  • Your Emirates ID
  • Proof of microchipping
  • Vaccination records

Fees

As a general guide, registration itself costs a small municipal fee (around AED 10), with microchipping costing separately (around AED 50 at municipality centers — private clinics may charge more for the procedure itself). Registration is required annually, so keep renewal dates in mind. Always check dm.gov.ae for current fees, as these are reviewed periodically.

What Happens If You Don’t Register

Owners of unregistered or unvaccinated pets can face fines, generally ranging from AED 150 to AED 500 depending on the violation. Beyond the legal requirement, registration and microchipping also make it far easier to reunite you with a lost pet.

After Registration

Once registered, make sure your pet wears its municipality tag when in public, keep vaccination and registration renewals on schedule, and update your contact details with the municipality if you move or change your phone number.
